Mesa Father Arrested for Murder After Infant’s Death at Longmore Apartments
Mesa, AZ (iSkyNews.com) — A 19-year-old father has been arrested and charged with First-Degree Murder and Child Abuse in connection with the tragic death of his infant child, according to the Mesa Police Department.
Authorities say the incident began on July 28th around 8:30 p.m., when officers were called to an apartment complex near 1033 S. Longmore for reports of a baby not breathing. Responding officers found the infant in respiratory distress and immediately initiated life-saving measures.
Mesa Fire and Medical crews rushed the child to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, the infant succumbed to their injuries on the morning of July 29th.
Hospital staff reported visible bruising and internal injuries, prompting Mesa Police detectives to launch a criminal investigation. Detectives later determined that the infant’s injuries were inflicted by the child's father, Arnold Barney, during an incident where he reportedly became frustrated while trying to calm the crying baby.
Barney was taken into custody and is currently being booked into jail on one count of First-Degree Murder and one count of Child Abuse.
