Serial "Snowbird" Burglar Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Targeting Seniors Across Pinal County
Florence, AZ — A man responsible for terrorizing senior citizens across Pinal County has been sentenced to 25 years in prison, following a sweeping string of residential and auto theft crimes that shook the communities of Maricopa and Casa Grande.
Pinal County Attorney Brad Miller announced that Joel Adam Garvin, 40, received the sentence in Pinal County Superior Court after pleading guilty to eight felony charges, including six counts of residential burglary and two counts of felony theft. The sentencing was handed down by Judge Harris.
From August 2023 to November 2024, Garvin committed a series of calculated break-ins, targeting "snowbirds" — senior citizens who were away from their Arizona homes for the season or on vacation. Over the course of the crime spree, he burglarized nine homes, stole seven vehicles, and caused over $170,000 in property damage and theft.
“After entering the homes of multiple victims, the defendant didn’t just steal property—he stole their sense of safety,” said Prosecutor Cameron Patt. “This sentence is a resounding message of deterrence.”
According to prosecutors, Garvin would break into unoccupied homes, often stealing spare car keys and loading stolen goods into the homeowner’s vehicle before driving away. The methodical nature of the crimes, the vulnerability of the victims, and the high-value losses made this case a top priority for law enforcement.
Investigators with the Casa Grande and Maricopa Police Departments worked closely together to identify Garvin, who initially remained unknown. The break in the case came when DNA evidence from blood left on broken safes and windows matched Garvin’s profile. Despite being identified, Garvin eluded authorities until November 11, 2024, when his final break-in was caught in real time by a homeowner’s motion-sensor cameras. Garvin was arrested the same day and has remained in custody since.
“This sentence reflects the serious harm the defendant inflicted on our community and the victims,” said County Attorney Miller. “Burglaries are not just property crimes — they’re deeply personal violations of safety and trust.”
Miller also used the opportunity to encourage community vigilance:
“A connected neighborhood is one of the best tools we have against these crimes. Know your neighbors, invest in security cameras, and report suspicious behavior.”
Garvin’s sentence underscores Pinal County’s aggressive stance against crimes that target vulnerable populations, particularly senior citizens.
