Mesa, AZ — A routine traffic stop in the early hours of Friday morning turned into a DUI arrest after an eastbound driver on Arizona State Route 202 was caught speeding and swerving dangerously near the raised median.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, on July 18, 2025, around 2:30 AM, a Hyundai Tucson passed a fully marked Highway Patrol SUV traveling eastbound on AZ-202. The vehicle exhibited signs of impairment—failing to maintain its lane and nearly colliding with the concrete median barrier.
🚓 Troopers Intervene:
State Troopers initiated a traffic stop and conducted a DUI investigation. The driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) was recorded at 0.170, more than twice Arizona’s legal limit.
The driver was promptly arrested for Extreme DUI, and their vehicle was impounded for 20 days as mandated under Arizona law.
🛑 Reminder from DPS:
“Drinking and driving is a fast track…to booking,” read the official statement from AZDPS. Officials urged residents to plan ahead, use rideshare apps, or designate a sober driver. The agency’s social safety campaign reinforces: DUI = Jail + 20 Day Impound.
📣 Public Safety Message:
Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of responsible driving, especially in the summer months when late-night travel is more frequent.
