Local Hero Spotlight: Eloy Fire Chief Weddle Proves Leadership Starts on the Ground

ELOY, AZ — It's not every day that a Fire Chief earns the spotlight for roadside heroics, but for Eloy’s Chief Kelly Weddle, rolling up his sleeves is just part of the job.

On a recent commute along Interstate 10, Chief Weddle and Assistant Chief Maestas were headed to a meeting when they spotted a stranded motorist frantically signaling for help. The man had blown a tire, had no jack, and was traveling with a small child in the sweltering desert heat.

Without hesitation, the chiefs pulled over. While Maestas retrieved a jack from his truck, Weddle dove in—knees to asphalt, loosening lug nuts and prepping the vehicle for lift. Within minutes, the tire was changed—thanks to Weddle’s fearless hands-on approach.

“Four minutes… Time me!” Maestas remembers hearing as Chief Weddle sprang into action. The feat was so impressive, he captured it in a photo—proof that Eloy’s top firefighter doesn’t shy away from hard work.

From frontline emergencies to everyday gestures, Chief Weddle continues to embody heart-led leadership. For residents of Eloy, this isn’t a surprise—it’s simply who he is.

Local Hero Spotlight? No contest. It’s Chief Kelly Weddle: first in service, fearless in action.
