Officer-Involved Shooting in Mesa After Stolen Vehicle Rams Police Cruiser

MESA, AZ (iSkyNews.com) – A high-stakes pursuit ended in an officer-involved shooting Thursday evening in Mesa, when a stolen vehicle rammed a police cruiser after leading officers on a chase through a residential neighborhood.

According to the Mesa Police Department, the incident began shortly after 4:45 p.m. when the Real Time Crime Center alerted officers to a stolen vehicle in the area of Power Road and Main Street. Officers located the vehicle and followed it southbound on Power Rd., eastbound on Broadway Rd., and northbound on 72nd Pl.

In an attempt to stop the vehicle, an officer deployed a Grappler—a specialized tool designed to immobilize fleeing cars—but the attempt failed. The suspect vehicle continued into a cul-de-sac, where it made a U-turn, driving off-road and through the front yards of several homes.

The vehicle then accelerated head-on toward police, ultimately ramming the side of a Mesa officer’s vehicle. It was at this moment that the officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspects were identified as two 17-year-old juveniles. The driver sustained a non-life-threatening injury to his hand, while the passenger was not injured. Two officers were involved in the shooting; neither suffered any physical injuries.

The Tempe Police Department is leading the investigation as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team. Mesa PD will continue to handle inquiries related to the original stolen vehicle case.
