MESA, AZ — June 22, 2025 — Mesa Police Department’s School Resource Officer (SRO) Cervantes has been recognized with one of the highest honors in school-based policing: the Deputy Kerry Schanaman School Resource Officer of the Year Award, presented by the Arizona School Resource Officers Association (ASROA).
This prestigious award celebrates the SRO who best embodies the spirit of service, leadership, and commitment to students and school communities across Arizona. The award is named in honor of Deputy Kerry Schanaman, a dedicated and beloved Cochise County deputy and school resource officer who tragically passed away in 2019 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Deputy Schanaman was widely respected for his selfless dedication to youth, his strong moral compass, and his unwavering service to the community. The award was established to continue his legacy and to recognize those who carry on his mission in schools today.
SRO Cervantes was selected for this honor based on a demonstrated commitment to the core values of the award, including:

- Dedication to creating safe and positive educational environments
