MESA, AZ – June 23, 2025 — Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) troopers are reminding drivers to slow down and pay attention, especially at night, after a dangerous incident occurred during the investigation of a wrong-way fatal crash on SR-202 westbound.
While troopers were working the crash scene under a partial road closure, a vehicle barreled through the restricted area, striking several traffic cones and coming alarmingly close to a marked patrol vehicle with its emergency lights activated.
The driver continued for about a mile before finally pulling over—with a traffic cone still wedged under the car's front bumper, as seen in the image shared by AZDPS.
Troopers say the driver was traveling too fast for nighttime conditions, had poorly functioning headlights, and failed to recognize both emergency lights and traffic control devices.
The driver was issued three citations for:
- Speeding
- Move Over Law violation
- Failure to obey a traffic control device
AZDPS issued a strong reminder:
“🚨 Slow down and move over when you see flashing lights.
⚠️ Watch for traffic cones and barriers—they’re there to protect lives.
🔧 And keep your vehicle safe and road-ready, especially your headlights.”
Thankfully, no additional injuries occurred during this incident. But troopers say it’s a clear example of how easily tragedy can compound when drivers ignore road safety.
