Apache Junction, AZ – June 5, 2025 – Summer’s heat isn’t the only thing rolling into Apache Junction; monsoon season officially begins on June 15th, bringing with it the potential for heavy rains, strong winds, and flash flooding. Local officials and emergency services are urging residents to take proactive steps now to ensure the safety of their properties and the entire community.
"Preparation is absolutely key when it comes to monsoon season," a local community leader stated, emphasizing the importance of getting ready before the storms hit. "These aren't just your average summer showers; they can be powerful and unpredictable."
For those living in areas prone to flooding, several crucial steps are recommended:
- Clear the way: Ensure that drainage areas around your home are free of leaves, trash, and other debris that could cause blockages and lead to flooding.
- Secure your surroundings: High winds are a hallmark of monsoon storms. Take the time to secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and trim any tree limbs that could become hazards.
- Maintain washes: If there are washes near your property, clear them to help manage stormwater runoff and reduce flood risk.
- Build an emergency kit: A 72-hour emergency kit is a lifesaver. Stock it with essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, necessary medications, and other supplies to get you through if power or services are interrupted.
To assist residents with flood control, the Superstition Fire & Medical District (SFMD) is providing free sandbags (just remember to bring your own shovel!) 24/7 at these locations:
- Fire Station 261 – 1135 W. Superstition Blvd.
- Fire Station 262 – 3995 E. Superstition Blvd.
- Fire Station 264 – 7557 E. U.S. Highway 60, Gold Canyon
Additionally, Pinal County offers sand and bags at 305 E. Superstition Blvd., Apache Junction, though with limited hours. More information on their availability can be found online.
Beyond property preparation, staying safe during a monsoon also means being aware of the immediate dangers.
Arizona Department of Transportation
"Pull Aside, Stay Alive" is a crucial message for drivers. Monsoon winds can whip up massive dust storms, known as haboobs, reducing visibility to zero in mere seconds. If you find yourself caught in one, the advice is clear: pull your vehicle off the roadway, put it in park, turn off your lights, and take your foot off the brake. Remain inside with your seatbelt fastened until the storm passes.
"When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors" is another vital reminder, especially with summer being a time for outdoor activities. Lightning can strike from as far as 10 miles away and quickly ignite fires, especially when coupled with high winds. If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to be a threat. Seek shelter indoors immediately and wait at least 30 minutes after the storm has passed before venturing back outside.
Finally, while not as common, residents should also be aware of the potential for landslides and debris flows. These can be triggered by intense, short bursts of rain, typical of Arizona's monsoons, even on slopes that appear dry.
Monsoon safety is a collective effort. For more in-depth information and resources, residents are encouraged to visit Arizona's official monsoon awareness page. Let’s all work together to ensure a safe and prepared monsoon season for Apache Junction.
