When officers arrived, they found the man suffering from severe burns across his body.

Investigators say the man had gained access to an SRP electrical substation and appeared to have tampered with electrical equipment before coming into contact with the high-voltage system. Officials believe he was electrocuted during the incident.

Salt River Project (SRP) confirmed that the injured man was not an SRP employee.

Mesa Fire and Medical personnel responded to the scene and transported the man to a local hospital. As of Tuesday, he remains in critical condition and continues to receive medical treatment.

Due to the nature of the incident, Mesa detectives are working alongside investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to determine exactly what occurred and why the man entered the facility.

Authorities emphasized that there is no threat to the public, and the area has been deemed safe.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Once completed, detectives will submit their findings to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether any criminal charges are warranted.

Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the Mesa Police Department.
