Mesa, AZ — A suspected gas leak prompted the evacuation of a commercial building and the temporary closure of a parking lot near a busy shopping area in Mesa on Tuesday morning.
At approximately 9:40 a.m., Mesa Fire & Medical crews responded to a 911 call reporting a strong smell of gas at 2048 E Baseline Rd, near the intersection of Jacinto and Baseline, adjacent to Sprouts Farmers Market.
Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed the odor and immediately evacuated all employees from the building as a precaution. The City of Mesa Gas Department was called in to assist with the investigation and containment.
Three fire engines and an East Deputy were on scene to assess the situation and ensure public safety. The parking lot at Jacinto was shut down for nearly two hours while crews investigated the source of the odor.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and after a thorough inspection, officials cleared the scene. Normal operations have since resumed in the area.
Mesa Fire & Medical urges residents and businesses to report any unusual odors or potential gas leaks immediately and follow evacuation procedures when instructed.
