Mesa, AZ (May 18, 2025) — A fast-moving fire tore through an apartment complex this afternoon at 1439 East Knoll Circle in Mesa, displacing multiple families and sending several people to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

Mesa Fire & Medical received a 911 call at approximately 12:04 PM, reporting heavy smoke and flames coming from one of the buildings. Firefighters arrived on scene to find thick black smoke billowing from the rooftop of Building 2. Flames were visible from a distance as crews worked swiftly to contain the growing inferno.

Initial reports indicate the fire may have started in the laundry room of Building 2, but the cause is still under investigation. Due to the rapid spread of the flames, firefighters issued an emergency alert ordering all personnel to evacuate the roof over concerns of collapse and unsafe conditions.

Residents were evacuated from the entire complex as a safety precaution. Among those affected are two adults and six children who lost their home in the blaze. Red Cross teams have responded to provide support, including temporary shelter, food, and basic necessities.

Mesa Fire confirmed that several individuals were treated on scene for smoke inhalation. Their current conditions are unknown.

In a scene that captured both the heartbreak and humanity of the moment, one resident was seen gathering his live chickens to safety as the fire raged nearby.

Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and investigate the origin of the fire. No fatalities have been reported at this time.

Residents who need assistance or have been displaced are urged to contact the local Red Cross or visit the emergency staging area set up by Mesa Fire & Medical on-site.
