Stormy Sunday Expected Across Central Florida, With Heavy Rain and Gusty Winds Possible

CENTRAL FLORIDA — It could be another soggy Sunday across parts of Central Florida, with showers and thunderstorms expected to become more widespread as the day goes on.

The National Weather Service in Melbourne says a few coastal showers and storms may pop up Sunday morning, Sept. 20, before rain chances increase during the afternoon.

Forecasters expect scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, with a few storms potentially becoming strong. The biggest concerns will be frequent lightning, wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph, and pockets of heavy rain that could drop 1 to 3 inches in a short period of time.

Rain chances will vary depending on where you are. Orlando and Leesburg are sitting around a 50% chance of rain, while Kissimmee, Melbourne, Vero Beach and Okeechobee are closer to 60%. Farther south, Fort Pierce and Stuart could see rain chances near 70%.

Daytona Beach has a lower rain chance at around 20%.

Temperatures will stay warm, with highs in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees inland and generally the mid to upper 80s closer to the coast.

If you have plans outside Sunday afternoon, it may be worth keeping an eye on the radar. Storms could develop fairly quickly, and some areas may get hit with a heavy downpour while neighborhoods just a few miles away stay mostly dry.

Beachgoers should also be careful. A Moderate Risk for rip currents remains in place at area beaches. Swimmers are encouraged to stay near a lifeguard and pay attention to posted beach warnings.

As with many Florida summer-style storm days, the weather may be quiet one minute and pouring the next.
