August 10th, 2026 UPDATE: Mesa Police have released new information regarding the deadly collision near Stapley Drive and 7th Avenue, confirming that two people lost their lives and two others were seriously injured.
The crash happened at approximately 7:10 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2026, and involved a pickup truck and an SUV.
According to Mesa Police, two occupants of one of the vehicles were critically injured in the collision. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second was transported to a local hospital, where they later died.
Police identified the victims as 44-year-old Idolinda Romero Apolinar and 74-year-old Gloria Apolinar Matias.
Two other adults involved in the collision suffered serious injuries, although police said their injuries are not currently considered life-threatening.
Investigators say impairment does not appear to have been a factor in the crash. However, speed may have contributed to the collision, and detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding what happened.
Stapley Drive was closed for several hours as Mesa Police documented the scene and collected evidence. The roadway has since reopened.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information may be released as it becomes available.

Stapley Drive Closed for Fatal Crash Investigation
Following the crash, the Mesa Police Department closed Stapley Drive as officers and investigators began documenting the scene and collecting evidence.
Stapley Drive is closed in both directions between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue. Drivers are being urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes while the investigation continues.
The closure is expected to remain in place for an extended period as investigators work to determine exactly what led to the fatal collision.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Additional details, including the circumstances surrounding the collision and the identities of those involved, were not immediately available.
