Pasco County, FLORIDA — Two women from Georgia were injured Saturday morning after an oversized trailer being hauled along Interstate 75 swung into their SUV during a lane-change maneuver, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 9:52 a.m. near the 280-mile marker on northbound Interstate 75.
According to FHP, a tractor-trailer hauling two oversized trailers was traveling northbound in the outside lane. The truck was being driven by a 36-year-old man from Kansas.
As the oversized load prepared to change lanes, a Dodge Ram 2500 helper vehicle, driven by a 70-year-old Havana, Florida man, unlocked the rear trailer to assist with the maneuver.
Investigators said that action caused the rear trailer to swing left into the center lane, where it collided with a Subaru Forester driven by a 23-year-old woman from Georgia.
The trailer, identified as an empty evaporator tank, then overrode the Subaru before both vehicles came to rest, blocking all northbound lanes of Interstate 75.
The Subaru's driver and her 22-year-old female passenger, also from Georgia, suffered minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The interstate remained blocked until approximately 11:40 a.m. while emergency crews worked to clear the scene and investigate the crash.
No injuries were reported for the drivers of the tractor-trailer or the helper vehicle.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident.
