ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — If you've ever been stuck in traffic approaching the northbound State Road 429 exit to Florida's Turnpike, you're not alone. But according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, some drivers are making the backup even more dangerous by illegally cutting across painted medians to skip the line.

The Sheriff's Office says the ongoing problem has generated numerous complaints from frustrated motorists. During a recent two-hour traffic enforcement operation, deputies issued 114 traffic citations to drivers who ignored lane markings and forced their way into traffic.

"We understand nobody enjoys sitting in traffic," the Orange County Sheriff's Office said in a social media post. "But cutting across the painted median and forcing your way into line isn't the answer."

Why It's Dangerous

Crossing a painted median or gore area isn't just inconsiderate—it creates a serious safety hazard.

Drivers waiting in line often don't expect another vehicle to suddenly cross a striped area and merge into traffic. These unexpected movements can lead to:

  • Rear-end crashes
  • Sideswipe collisions
  • Road rage incidents
  • Sudden braking that creates chain-reaction crashes

Transportation engineers design painted medians and gore areas to separate traffic movements and provide a buffer between lanes. Driving across these markings defeats that purpose and increases the risk for everyone on the road.

What Florida Law Says

Under Florida Statute 316.090, drivers are required to obey official traffic control devices and pavement markings. Painted medians, channelizing lines, and gore areas are not travel lanes and are intended to direct the safe flow of traffic.

Crossing these marked areas to bypass traffic can result in a traffic citation and may also contribute to liability if a crash occurs.

Plan Ahead

The Orange County Sheriff's Office is reminding drivers that a few minutes saved by cutting the line simply isn't worth the risk.

Instead, motorists should:

  • Watch for advance exit signs.
  • Merge into the proper lane early.
  • Follow pavement markings.
  • Stay patient during heavy traffic.
  • Drive predictably so other motorists can anticipate your movements.

While traffic congestion can be frustrating, following the rules of the road helps reduce crashes and keeps everyone moving as safely as possible.

The Sheriff's Office says enforcement efforts will continue along the SR 429 northbound exit to the Florida Turnpike in response to ongoing complaints from the public.
