LAKELAND, Fla. — The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating after human bones were discovered Thursday evening in a wooded area near Lakeland.

According to Sheriff Grady Judd, the remains were found at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, 2026, near the intersection of Fish Hatchery Road and Morgan Combee Road.

Sheriff Judd said the discovery was made by a group of children who were playing in the area when they came across what appeared to be human bones. The children alerted adults, who then contacted law enforcement.

Deputies responded to the scene and secured the area while detectives and crime scene investigators began processing the location.

During a media briefing Friday afternoon, Sheriff Judd confirmed the remains are believed to be human and that investigators are working to determine the identity of the individual and how long the remains may have been at the location.

The Sheriff said detectives are examining evidence recovered from the scene and are coordinating with forensic specialists and the Medical Examiner's Office as part of the investigation.

Authorities have not yet released information regarding the age, sex, or identity of the deceased individual.

Investigators are also working to determine whether the case is connected to any missing persons investigations in Polk County or surrounding jurisdictions.

The wooded area remained an active crime scene as detectives continued their investigation Friday.
