Elderly Rider Killed in Skyway Bridge Crash After Attempting to Avoid Vehicle

SKYWAY BRIDGE, FL — A tragic crash on the northbound lanes of the Skyway Bridge claimed the life of a 76-year-old Pinellas Park man Sunday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say the crash occurred around 12:45 p.m. near Milepost 12, when the man was traveling northbound on a three-wheeled Spyder motorcycle.

Investigators report the rider attempted to take evasive action to avoid a collision with an unknown vehicle. During that maneuver, he lost control of the motorcycle.

The vehicle traveled onto the shoulder, where it struck the outside guardrail before being redirected back into the roadway, coming to rest in the outside northbound lane.

During the crash sequence, the rider was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered fatal injuries at the scene.

The crash caused a significant disruption, with all northbound lanes of the Skyway Bridge closed for several hours as crews responded and investigated the scene.

Traffic was not fully reopened until approximately 5:17 p.m.

The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash, including the involvement of the unknown vehicle that may have contributed to the incident.
