New Details About Barricaded Suspect Who Fired Multiple Rounds at Mesa Police Officers

Mesa, AZ - Mesa Police have released new details following the arrest of 33-year-old Thomas Zambrano, who barricaded himself inside his apartment and fired multiple rounds at officers during a tense hours-long standoff early Wednesday morning.

Just after 5:00 a.m. on November 5, 2025, officers were dispatched to the 4700 block of East Cabellero Street for reports of a family fight. According to dispatch, a caller reported that Zambrano had assaulted his girlfriend, who was bleeding from her head when police arrived.

Upon arrival, officers attempted to get Zambrano to exit the apartment, but he refused to come out and began threatening officers from inside. Moments later, Zambrano reportedly opened the front door holding a rifle, prompting officers to establish a perimeter and call in the Mesa Police SWAT Team.

Despite several hours of negotiation attempts, Zambrano continued to refuse surrender. SWAT officers eventually deployed gas into the apartment to try to force compliance. In response, Zambrano opened fire from inside, with several rounds striking nearby structures. One round shattered the window of a neighboring residence, injuring an occupant with broken glass—but fortunately, no one was hit by gunfire.

After continued negotiation, officers were able to convince Zambrano to surrender peacefully. He was taken into custody without officers returning fire—a resolution police described as a “great show of discipline and professionalism.”

Zambrano was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being booked into jail on multiple felony charges, including:

  • Aggravated Assault
  • Discharging a Firearm at a Residential Structure
  • Prohibited Possessor in Possession of a Firearm
  • Domestic Violence–Related Offenses
