Mesa SWAT Deploys Robot and Tear Gas During Barricaded Suspect Standoff Following Domestic Violence Call

Mesa, AZ (iSkyNews.com) — A tense and chaotic scene unfolded in northeast Mesa Wednesday morning after a domestic violence call led to a barricaded suspect and full SWAT activation near 4735 E Caballero St. Our iSkyNews.com Reporters were first on the scene and documented what unfolded soon after.

According to Mesa Police, officers were dispatched around 5:00 a.m. for reports of a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, officers located a female victim with multiple injuries, who was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

As officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, the individual barricaded themselves inside the residence, prompting the deployment of Mesa Police SWAT.

During the standoff, non-lethal rounds were fired as tactical teams worked to bring the suspect into custody. The Mesa Police SWAT robot was brought to the scene, and tear gas was deployed, causing confusion as media crews, witnesses, neighbors, and even nearby fire personnel scrambled for cover.

At one point, gunshots rang out, sending everyone in the vicinity to the ground for safety. Shortly after 11:19 a.m., the suspect surrendered to police. Both the suspect and a dog inside the home reportedly suffered tear gas-related burns. The suspect is being treated by Mesa Fire & Medical, and officers are now working to clear the scene.

Mesa Police Detectives confirmed that the suspect fired multiple rounds at officers before being taken into custody this morning, Wednesday.

Officials say University Drive remains closed in both directions between Higley and Greenfield Roads as crews wrap up operations. The area is expected to remain active for several hours.

The female victim remains hospitalized for her injuries.
