Barricaded Suspect Taken Into Custody After Hours-Long SWAT Standoff in Mesa

Mesa, Ariz. — A tense, hours-long barricaded situation unfolded in East Mesa on Thursday after police attempted to serve a warrant at a home near 5905 E. Ellis Street.

According to Mesa Police, officers arrived just after 1 p.m. to serve a warrant when the suspect — identified only as "Michael"— barricaded himself inside the residence. As the situation escalated, Mesa Police requested assistance from SWAT teams.

Two armored BearCat SWAT vehicles responded to the scene — one from Mesa Police and another from Tempe Police. Officers shut down Ellis Street east of 58th Street and Adobe Street westbound at 59th Place to secure the area.

A Mesa Police helicopter circled overhead while a law enforcement drone and a mini indoor drone were used to gain visual access inside the home. Throughout the incident, officers repeatedly issued commands for the suspect to surrender.

Around 5 p.m., after several hours of negotiations, SWAT deployed tear gas twice before making entry. Officers broke windows and forced open the door to reach the suspect. Once inside, they discovered Michael hiding in the attic.

He was taken into custody without further incident. Several additional individuals were also seen detained, though their involvement remains unconfirmed.

As of now, roads in the area remain partially blocked along Ellis Street. Mesa Police say the home is still under investigation, and detectives are processing the scene.

iSkyNews.com reached out to Mesa Police for comment, and according to Detective Aguirre, a search warrant was being served. The department will release additional information as the investigation continues.
