Gas Line Struck by Construction Crews Prompts Emergency Shelter-in-Place in Mesa

MESA, Ariz. (iSkyNews.com) — A construction mishap caused quite a scare Monday morning after crews struck a 2-inch natural gas line near Stapley Drive and McKellips Road, prompting an emergency shelter-in-place and evacuations in the surrounding area.

According to Mesa Fire & Medical, the incident occurred around 9:03 a.m., when construction workers accidentally ruptured the gas line. The resulting leak led to an immediate shelter-in-place order and precautionary evacuation of several nearby businesses as officials assessed the situation.

City of Mesa GasMesa Fire & Medical, and Mesa Police all responded quickly to secure the area, monitor air quality, and ensure public safety. No injuries were reported. However, westbound lanes of McKellips Road prior to Stapley were temporarily shut down as crews worked to contain and repair the leak.

By 10:00 a.m., the situation was declared under control, the shelter-in-place order was lifted, command was terminated, and all units were placed back in service.

Thank you to Mesa Fire & Medical, Mesa Police, and the City of Mesa for their rapid response and outstanding work in keeping our community safe.

If you shelter in place, after the explosion, it makes it easier to find bodies.
