BREVARD COUNTY, FL – Heartbreak struck early Sunday morning when a wrong-way driver caused a chain-reaction crash that left three people dead and several others injured on I-95 just south of Wickham Road.
Florida Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 3:50 a.m. when a 2020 Toyota Corolla was spotted going the wrong way in the northbound inside lane. The Corolla collided head-on with a 2014 Chevrolet Impala, sparking a violent chain reaction that ultimately involved eight vehicles.
Troopers confirmed that the driver of the Corolla, along with the driver and passenger in the Impala, died at the scene. Five other people were rushed to area hospitals with injuries. FHP is still working to identify everyone involved.
The crash shut down all northbound lanes of I-95 for several hours as investigators pieced together what happened and tow crews cleared mangled vehicles and debris from the roadway. Traffic was rerouted to Pineda Causeway, causing heavy delays for much of the morning.
The Florida Highway Patrol says the investigation is still active, and a full press release will be issued to iSkyNews.com once more information is confirmed.
Troopers are reminding drivers to stay alert, especially in the overnight hours, and to immediately report any wrong-way drivers by calling *FHP (*347).
