13-Year-Old Behind the Wheel: Stolen Truck Flips and Lands in Tree After 100 MPH Chase on I-40 Near Flagstaff
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A late-night joyride nearly turned deadly after a 13-year-old driver crashed a stolen truck while traveling more than 100 mph on Interstate 40 near Flagstaff early Monday morning.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), troopers were alerted around 1:00 a.m. on September 30, 2025, to a wrong-way driver heading eastbound on I-40. A deputy later spotted the truck cross the median, correct itself, and continue east at high speed.
The truck, which had fled from the Flagstaff Police Department, struck a guardrail, “rode” along it, then rolled several times before coming to rest lodged in a tree.
The crash was so violent that the steering wheel broke off and was found about 50 feet away from where the truck landed.
Troopers were shocked to find a 13-year-old behind the wheel and an 11-year-old passenger inside the wrecked Chevrolet Silverado. Both juveniles sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators noted the young driver showed six out of six signs of intoxication, and a blood alcohol test later confirmed a 0.183 BAC—more than twice the legal limit for adults.
“We’re incredibly thankful these kids survived,” officials said. “This could have ended in tragedy. Underage drinking and unlicensed driving are a dangerous mix.”
Authorities are urging parents to have conversations with their children about the dangers of drinking and driving—especially involving stolen or unlicensed vehicles.
The crash remains under investigation by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
