PAYSON, AZ — A routine traffic stop turned into a major arrest Thursday afternoon when Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Highway Patrol Troopers pulled over a repeat offender traveling at 92 MPH in a 65 MPH zone on State Route 87 near Payson.
The vehicle, which had expired registration for nearly a year, was driven by a man with a canceled Arizona licensedue to multiple prior DUI-related revocations. Troopers recognized the driver as a repeat offender who had been previously arrested for driving on a revoked license, and whose vehicle had been impounded just two months earlier.
Upon arresting the driver for criminal speed and driving on a revoked license, Troopers conducted a standard inventory of the vehicle before impound. What they found escalated the situation:
- A loaded handgun
- Half an ounce of cocaine
- 5 grams of methamphetamine
- A digital scale
- Multiple plastic baggies
Further investigation revealed the driver was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.
He was booked into Gila County Jail on multiple charges, including:
- Unlawful possession of a firearm
- Possession of narcotics for sale
- Criminal speed
- Driving on a revoked license
AZDPS emphasized the importance of vigilance and swift enforcement in keeping Arizona roads safe.
