MESA, AZ — A quiet morning in Mesa was shattered today when a fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. in Unit 47 of a mobile home located at 342 S 40th Street. Thick brown smoke poured into the sky as neighbors rushed from the area, some shouting, others in tears.

Mesa Fire & Medical crews arrived quickly and immediately upgraded the call to a “Working Fire,” signaling the need for additional support. Fire engines, a Utility Truck, Rehab Truck, Battalion Chief, Mesa Police, and even Gilbert Fire joined the response. SRP was dispatched to cut power to the home, and a Board Up company was called to help secure the property.

The homeowner managed to escape safely—but heartbreak followed. Two dogs were trapped inside. Firefighters worked desperately to save them, using a “Fido Bag,” a specialized kit designed to help pets breathe after smoke exposure. These bags include oxygen masks sized for animals, along with leashes and water bowls. Despite their efforts, both dogs tragically passed away from smoke inhalation.

Our iSkynews.com Reporters on the scene could smell the smoke from blocks away. The mobile home’s roof had been ventilated—leaving a large hole—and the air was thick with grief. Residents nearby were visibly shaken, some running from the area, others comforting one another.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
