You Can’t Make This Up: Smugglers Busted in Prius During Monsoon With Drugs, Warrant & Human Cargo

Cochise County, AZ — In a bizarre case that could only be described as a criminal comedy of errors, two out-of-state smugglers were arrested in Cochise County after attempting to transport a Mexican national across Arizona — all while driving a Toyota Prius loaded with methamphetaminedrug paraphernalia, and one illegal immigrant hidden in the trunk.

According to U.S. Border Patrol – Tucson Sector, it all began on July 7th when surveillance technology from the Brian A. Terry Border Patrol Station in Naco, AZ spotted a Mexican national illegally crossing the U.S. border and getting into the white Prius.

Agents attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspects fled. During the chase — with monsoon rain pouring down — the Prius eventually came to a stop. Inside, agents discovered:

  • One undocumented immigrant curled up in the trunk
  • Two U.S. citizen males, one of whom is a convicted felon with an active out-of-state warrant for dangerous drug possession and distribution
  • A stash of methamphetamine and associated drug paraphernalia

Both men were taken into custody and face federal smuggling charges, while the undocumented individual was processed per immigration protocols. The vehicle was seized.

Yes, this all happened during a monsoon. 🌧️

“Great job to the agents who stayed sharp in dangerous weather conditions to stop this brazen smuggling attempt,” said a Border Patrol spokesperson.
