Arizona Driver Arrested for DUI After Dragging Gas Pump Hose on Highway

TEMPE, AZ — An Arizona driver was arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) after State Troopers spotted a vehicle dragging a gas pump hose and handle along AZ-101, just north of US-60—sparking dangerously across the highway.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), the driver had just left the QuikTrip gas station at Hunt Highway and Gary Road in San Tan Valley when they failed to remove the pump nozzle from their vehicle. The hose remained attached, creating a trail of sparks as it scraped the pavement.

🚨 BAC Nearly Twice the Legal Limit

Troopers conducted a traffic stop and administered a breathalyzer test, which registered a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.152—nearly double Arizona’s legal limit of 0.08. The driver was immediately arrested and charged with DUI.

👮‍♂️ DUI = Jail in Arizona

Arizona enforces some of the strictest DUI laws in the country, with mandatory jail time even for first-time offenders. A BAC over 0.15% qualifies as an Extreme DUI, which can result in 30+ days of jail, fines over $2,500, and ignition interlock requirements.

⚠️ Safety Reminder

Authorities are using the incident to remind drivers:

  • Always remove the gas pump nozzle before driving away.
  • Dragging fuel equipment can cause fires, road hazards, and property damage.
  • Impaired driving puts everyone at risk—including other motorists and pedestrians.

💬 AZDPS emphasized: “Courteous vigilance saves lives. Don’t drink and drive—and don’t forget the pump.”
