JEROME, AZ – You know Jerome, right? That crazy cool town clinging to the side of a mountain, all twisty roads and history dripping from every old brick? Well, it's always been known as a place with a past – a lively past, if you catch my drift. For ages, folks have whispered about ghosts and strange happenings in this old mining town. But lately? It feels like the whispers are getting a little louder, the shivers a little stronger.
See, Jerome's got this vibe. It’s seen its share of tough times – mining accidents, fires that ripped through everything, and illnesses that swept through the tight-knit community. You can almost feel it in the air. And for years, people have shared stories: a flicker of light in an empty window, a cold spot outta nowhere, or maybe just the feeling of someone… else… being there.
But talk to folks who live and work in Jerome now, and they’ll tell you something’s been up. Take Sarah Jenkins, who owns this awesome antique shop right on Main Street. She’s not easily spooked, but she had a moment recently that raised her eyebrows. "A customer was looking at some old photos," she told me, leaning in like it was still a secret, "and they swore they saw a shadow zip across the back room. Then, clear as day, a little porcelain doll on the shelf just… tipped over. All by itself. We get odd things, sure, but this felt different."

Ghost EMF Reader and Spirit Box Ghost Tour / Ciara Perez |
And it’s not just the locals. Tourists doing the ghost tours – which, let's be honest, are a big draw – are coming away with some pretty vivid stories too. Maria Rodriguez, visiting from California, was on one the other night. "We were in the Grand Hotel lobby, and suddenly, I felt this intense cold spot, even though it wasn't chilly at all. Then, my phone, which was fully charged, just died. Gone. It was so weird."
Katrina Jones, who’s been leading those ghost tours for years, just nods when she hears these things. "Jerome’s got layers," she says with a knowing smile. "Layers of history, layers of tough times. People report feeling more than just a little tingle now. They're hearing actual whispers, seeing things move. Whether it’s just the old buildings settling or something more… well, something’s definitely keeping the energy alive up here."
Of course, there are always folks who’ll say it’s just old buildings creaking or your mind playing tricks on you. But when you hear so many people, both those who live there and those just passing through, sharing similar experiences, you start to wonder.
Jerome’s always been a place where the past feels present. But lately, it's like those old stories aren't just stories anymore. They’re little nudges, little whispers, reminding us that maybe, just maybe, the spirits of this resilient mountain town are still very much around, making their presence – and their stories – known.
