Suspect Shot After Violent Struggle with Deputy Behind Orlando Store

Orange County, FL – A routine check-in with a suspicious individual escalated into a violent confrontation Friday morning, leaving one man hospitalized and prompting a state investigation into a deputy-involved shooting.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), the incident began just before 8 a.m. behind the Save Discount Store at 2793 N. Hiawassee Rd. A patrol deputy approached a man who was in a fenced-in area behind the business, asking what he was doing there.

The encounter quickly turned chaotic.

Authorities say the man appeared to comply at first, jumping the fence as if to speak with the deputy. But instead, he grabbed a bag from the ground and attempted to flee. As the deputy tried to detain him, the man began punching the deputy repeatedly, eventually forcing him to the ground.

While on the ground, the suspect allegedly struck the deputy in the head at least ten more times. During the scuffle, two firearms fell out of the suspect’s bag, landing near the struggle.

The fight lasted one minute and sixteen seconds, according to OCSO. When the suspect got off the deputy, he moved toward the dropped firearms and picked them up. At that point, the deputy was able to get to his feet and fired his service weapon, striking the man.

Deputies immediately rendered aid until paramedics arrived. The suspect was taken to a hospital and is currently listed in stable condition. The deputy was also hospitalized for evaluation of a head injury and is reported to be in good condition.

The suspect is expected to face charges including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, with additional charges pending.

Per standard protocol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the shooting and will present its findings to the State Attorney’s Office. The deputy who discharged his weapon has been placed on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the FDLE's review. The OCSO will conduct its own internal investigation once the external review is complete.
