MESA, AZ — A known gang member was shot and killed Friday afternoon during a confrontation with law enforcement in Mesa. The shooting occurred near Baseline Road and Val Vista Drive around 2:00 p.m., involving the U.S. Marshals Service and the Arizona WANTED Violent Offender Task Force.

According to officials with the Marshals Service, the task force was attempting to arrest the suspect, who was wanted on a long list of serious charges including aggravated assault, aggravated assault domestic violence, misconduct involving weapons, disorderly conduct with a weapon, threats, and assault.

Agents located the suspect at a residence and began surveillance. When the suspect left in a vehicle, they attempted to initiate a traffic stop. During the stop, officials say the suspect opened fire on the officers, who returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured in the gunfire.

As of 9:00 pm - Baseline Road remains shut down between Lindsay Road and Val Vista Drive as the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) takes over the investigation.

One nearby resident described the scene to iSkyNews, saying: “I thought it was just a car accident because of how the vehicles were positioned. I would never have guessed it was something like this.”

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
