MESA, AZ — A collision involving a DPS police motorcycle and a civilian vehicle left an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper seriously injured Friday evening in Mesa, according to the Mesa Police Department.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:59 p.m. at the intersection of Signal Butte Road and the SR-24 freeway. Officials say the trooper was responding to a call with lights and sirens activated, traveling eastbound on SR-24 and proceeding through the Signal Butte intersection against a red light.
At the same time, a vehicle in the northbound left turn lane on Signal Butte Road attempted to turn left onto the westbound SR-24 on-ramp, striking the trooper’s motorcycle as it passed through the intersection.
The DPS trooper sustained a serious leg injury and was transported to a local hospital. Authorities say the injury is not life-threatening. Updates on the trooper's condition are being provided by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene.
