DeLand Stray Bullet Strikes Teenager: $10,000 Reward Offered for Information on Shooters

DeLand, FL – Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood has announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of suspects involved in a shooting that resulted in a 16-year-old boy being grazed in the head by a stray bullet. The incident occurred just after midnight on Sunday at 1757 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.

Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO) detectives are actively investigating the shooting, which took place around 12:33 a.m. The teenage victim was a passenger in a vehicle with his family, returning home from a graduation party, when they inadvertently drove past the location as shots were fired.

The 16-year-old, though currently listed in stable condition, is undergoing further medical treatment and evaluation for potential complications arising from the head injury.

The initial investigation suggests the shooting stemmed from an altercation between two individuals on foot in the parking lot of the N. Woodland Boulevard address.

"We are urging anyone with information to come forward," Sheriff Chitwood stated. "This young man and his family were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, and we are committed to finding those responsible."

This incident was one of two shootings VSO detectives responded to overnight. The first, occurring just before midnight on Kings Ridge Terrace in Deltona, involved a resident who reported being confronted by an armed individual. The resident retreated indoors, after which a second subject reportedly fired at least one shot at the house before both fled. No injuries were reported in the Deltona incident.
