Wrong-Way Driver Killed, Three Seriously Injured in Fiery Head-On Crash in Lake County
LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A wrong-way crash on State Road 33 in Lake County claimed the life of one driver and left three others seriously injured early Sunday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 6:20 a.m. near the intersection of State Road 33 and Bakers Lane.
Investigators say a 2026 Toyota Camry was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of State Road 33 as it approached Bakers Lane. At the same time, a 2016 Dodge Journey was traveling southbound in its proper lane south of Bakers Lane.
According to FHP, the wrong-way Camry entered the direct path of the Dodge Journey, resulting in a devastating head-on collision.
The force of the impact caused the Dodge Journey to become partially engulfed in flames, creating a dangerous scene for emergency responders.
The driver of the Toyota Camry, a 24-year-old Orlando man, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two passengers inside the Camry, a 25-year-old Orlando man and a 23-year-old Oviedo man, suffered serious injuries and were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center.
The driver of the Dodge Journey, a 33-year-old Kissimmee man, was also transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Authorities confirmed the deceased driver's next of kin has been notified.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate what led the Camry to travel the wrong way on State Road 33.
