DAVENPORT, Fla. — If this was Donavan Halsnik's attempt to cast a "Get Out of Jail Free" spell, it wasn't very effective.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the Target at Posner Park in Davenport around 5:12 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a retail theft involving Magic: The Gathering trading cards.
Investigators say 25-year-old Donavan Jakob Halsnik of Lutz arrived at the store around 4:30 p.m., placed several packs of Magic cards into a Target shopping bag, and walked out without paying.
But apparently one quest wasn't enough.
Deputies say Halsnik then returned to the store and started gathering even more Magic: The Gathering cards, as if he had unlocked a bonus level.
By the time the alleged shopping spree ended, authorities say $425.93 worth of trading cards had been taken.
When deputies caught up with Halsnik, they recovered the stolen cards from his vehicle and returned them to Target.
According to the Sheriff's Office, Halsnik admitted to deputies that "he was stupid and he should have never done it."
It was an honest assessment, but unfortunately not one that erased the charges.
Instead of walking away with a powerful deck, Halsnik was taken to the Polk County Sheriff's Processing Center, where he was charged with two counts of retail petit theft (M2) and issued a trespass warning from Target.
As for the trading cards, they were safely returned to the store—meaning the only thing added to Halsnik's collection was a booking photo.
