Auburndale Man Killed After Crashing Into Tree on Thornhill Road Near Winter Haven

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — A 33-year-old Auburndale man was killed early Sunday morning after his vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree near Winter Haven, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:02 a.m. on May 31, 2026, along Thornhill Road just north of Sugar Creek Road.

When deputies and emergency responders arrived, they found the driver deceased inside a gray Toyota Corolla.

According to preliminary findings from the Polk County Sheriff's Office Traffic Homicide Unit, the driver was traveling southbound on Thornhill Road when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. The vehicle then left the pavement and struck a large tree on the driver's side.

The impact caused catastrophic damage to the vehicle.

Investigators said the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Thornhill Road remained closed for approximately three hours while deputies processed the scene and gathered evidence.

Traffic Homicide detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Authorities have not released any additional information at this time.
