Mesa Police Deploy Grappler Device During Felony Stop; At Least One Person Arrested

MESA, AZ — A felony stop in Mesa on Thursday night resulted in a dramatic but controlled takedown after the Mesa Police Gang Unit deployed a specialized device to prevent the vehicle from fleeing.

The incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on December 11, 2025, when officers stopped a vehicle with a person of interest in an active investigation, officers used a Grappler Police Bumper, a safety device mounted to the front of a patrol vehicle that extends a heavy-duty strap designed to wrap around a suspect’s rear tire, bringing the vehicle to a controlled stop.

Due to the active scene, Mesa Police requested additional units to shut down both eastbound and westbound lanes of University Drive between Greenfield Road and Higley Road.

Officers with the Gang Unit approached the stopped vehicle with weapons drawn as a precaution. At least one person was arrested on felony charges and taken into custody without incident.

Shortly after the arrest, officers reopened the westbound lanes, while eastbound lanes remained closed. Around 9:00 p.m., the vehicle was loaded onto a tow truck, and the scene cleared shortly afterward.
