House Fire on Pasadena Injures One, Cat Trapped Inside

Mesa, AZ - Mesa Fire and Medical crews responded to a major residential fire Saturday evening near 850 S. Pasadena, after multiple 911 calls reported a home fully engulfed in flames.

The fire began around 7:30 p.m., with a 911 caller reporting flames, smoke, and sparks coming from the back of the house. When crews arrived, they were met with heavy fire and thick smoke pouring through the roof. Firefighters also noted a dozen or more solar panels on the structure, which added to the complexity of the response.

full balance assignment was called, bringing in Rehab, Utility, and City Services to assist.
➡️ Rehab is a designated rest and recovery area where firefighters can receive medical evaluation, hydration, and cooling after working in extreme heat or hazardous conditions.

Utilities were requested to secure gas and electric service to the property for safety. The homeowner told officials that a propane tank exploded in the backyard, and the fire appeared to have originated near the home’s air handler unit.

At one point, command declared emergency traffic, ordering all crews to exit the structure immediately as the fire intensified and conditions deteriorated. The firefighting strategy was shifted from an offensive to a defensive approach— meaning instead of battling the flames from inside, firefighters withdrew and began fighting the fire from above and outside the home to ensure safety.

Firefighters were advised to leave the roof and interior immediately, as collapse became imminent. Multiple ventilation holes were cut into the roof, but solar panels gave way and fell into the structure, making internal firefighting unsafe.

One person suffered burn injuries to their hands and was treated on scene. The family was safely evacuated, but one cat remains trapped inside, with its condition unknown. The home has been declared a total loss due to the extensive damage.

Roads on Pasadena were closed as emergency crews worked to control the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Our hearts go out to the family affected and to the brave first responders who rushed to help.
