Mesa Police Arrest Man After Chaotic Night Involving Assault, Pursuit, and Barricade Investigation
MESA, Ariz. (iSkyNews.com) — A chaotic series of events unfolded Monday night in Mesa near Ellis Street and 58th Street, beginning with a reported assault and attempted robbery and ending with police taking a man into custody after an extensive neighborhood search.
According to Mesa Police and witnesses on scene, the situation began around 8:00 p.m. when a woman returned home after grabbing food. She was approached by a man walking down the street who reportedly ran toward her, threatened her with a knife, and attempted to rob her. The woman fled the area and called for help as officers nearby responded.
Around the same time, officers were investigating a separate domestic assault after a man reported that another male had assaulted his girlfriend. When police arrived at that location, they found a woman with a minor leg injury and identified a suspect known to them.
While canvassing the neighborhood, officers encountered a man matching the description of the assault suspect. When approached, the man ran from officers, jumping fences and entering nearby yards. Witnesses told iSkyNews.com the man broke into a home and barricaded himself inside, prompting a large police response that included the Mesa Police Air Unit circling overhead.
Officers surrounded the home and issued commands for the man to come out. After a period of time, he exited and was taken into custody without further incident.
Mesa Police later confirmed the man arrested was the suspect’s brother, who closely resembles the original assault suspect and had active warrants. He was booked for resisting arrest, assault on an officer, and outstanding warrants. The original assault suspect remains at large, but police have confirmed his identity.
Detective Dreyer of the Mesa Police Department confirmed to iSkyNews.com:
“Officers initially contacted a man who reported that another male had assaulted his girlfriend. After obtaining the address, officers responded and located a female with a minor leg injury. The suspect’s brother, who has active warrants, was later mistaken for the original assault suspect and taken into custody.”
Both the man arrested and an officer were treated by Mesa Fire and Medical for minor injuries.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and officers continue to search for the original assault suspect.
