MESA, Ariz. — A possible gas leak at Mountain View High School located at 2700 E Brown Rd. on Monday evening prompted a major emergency response and sent multiple people to the hospital after several individuals reported feeling ill, according to Mesa Fire and Medical.
At approximately 5:45 p.m., Mesa Fire & Medical received a 911 call reporting a strong odor of gas coming from the janitor’s closet area located on the southwest side of the school. The caller told dispatchers they were experiencing a headache and other symptoms consistent with gas exposure.
A full response from Mesa Fire & Medical and Mesa Police was dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders immediately evacuated the school and nearby buildings out of caution while they investigated the source of the odor.

According to initial reports, the band was in session at the time of the incident. Several people at the scene reported feeling sick and were evaluated by paramedics before being transported by ambulance to local hospitals for further assessment.
The City of Mesa Gas Division also responded to assist firefighters in identifying and mitigating the source of the leak. Crews remained on site for about an hour to ventilate the building and ensure it was safe to re-enter.
The scene was declared clear around 6:50 p.m., and no further hazards were reported.
