MESA, AZ — Mesa Fire and Medical crews were dispatched at approximately 10:45 a.m. Monday to a home near 2711 W. Nopal Circle, Mesa, AZ 85202.

According to dispatch reports, a 911 caller reported smoke coming from the attic and advised there were two dogs and two cats inside the residence. The caller also said she was attempting to contact her father during the emergency.

When crews arrived, they confirmed an active fire with flames visible inside the garage. The call was upgraded to a “working garage fire,” prompting additional resources including multiple fire engines, ambulances, a utility truck, and support units. Firefighters had to force entry into the garage and open up a hole in the attic to ventilate smoke and gain access to the flames.

SRP (Salt River Project) was dispatched to secure utilities, and Mesa Police responded to assist with traffic control and scene safety. The Mesa Fire Connectors were also dispatched to the scene to provide additional support and resources. Crews reported moderate smoke conditions throughout the interior of the home as they worked to contain the blaze.

By 11:06 a.m., Mesa Fire and Medical reported the fire was under control. Unfortunately, two residents will be displaced as a result of this fire. A Mesa Fire Investigator was dispatched to determine the cause of the blaze.

No human injuries have been reported at this time, and it remains unclear whether all pets were safely removed. Firefighters worked aggressively to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring homes.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was caused by an extension cord that melted in the electrical outlet, igniting the blaze. A Mesa Fire Investigator remains on scene to complete a full investigation.

This is a developing story.
