Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Narrowly Escapes Serious Injury in Five-Vehicle Crash on Turnpike

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooper had a close call Friday morning after a five-vehicle crash along the Florida Turnpike northbound near State Road 417 (mile marker 250).

According to FHP, the crash began when a semi-truck attempted a lane change and sideswiped a Toyota Camry. A Dodge Ram pickup swerved in reaction, colliding with both vehicles before overturning down an embankment.

As the Ram careened out of control, it struck an FHP patrol car parked on the outside shoulder. The impact pushed the trooper’s Dodge Charger into the path of a Buick SUV.

The trooper, who was standing just outside his patrol car, managed to dart out of the way as the chain reaction unfolded. Both he and the driver of the Dodge Ram were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. All other drivers involved escaped injury.

Photos from the scene show the Dodge Ram heavily damaged and overturned in the grass, while the FHP patrol car sustained major rear-end damage.

FHP officials expressed relief that the outcome wasn’t worse.

“We are thankful everyone was okay! This is a reminder to always change lanes safely, stay alert, and give your full attention to the road,” the agency stated.

The crash temporarily slowed traffic on the busy Turnpike during Friday’s commute but was later cleared.
