Phoenix, AZ – In August, two quick-thinking members of the City of Phoenix Facilities Division HVAC team became unexpected first responders after witnessing a dramatic rollover accident.

Zach, an HVAC apprentice and recently certified EMT, and Placido, a building equipment operator, were on the job when they saw a truck lose control and flip, damaging a backflow device and flooding the area with water. Without hesitation, both men rushed to the scene to check on the driver’s condition.

Zach immediately put his EMT training to use, providing first aid to stabilize the driver until emergency crews arrived. Meanwhile, Placido contacted the City of Phoenix Water Services Department to have the water shut off, preventing further hazards in the area.

Both employees stayed with the driver, keeping him calm and monitored until Phoenix Police and Phoenix Fire Department crews arrived on scene.

Thankfully, the driver is expected to recover from the crash.

“Zach and Placido went above and beyond the call of duty,” said a City of Phoenix spokesperson. “Their fast action not only provided critical care to the driver but also protected the surrounding community from additional danger. They make our department proud.”

The City of Phoenix commends Zach and Placido for their bravery, quick response, and dedication to public safety.
