Schizophrenic Man Fatally Shot After Charging Deputy With Knife in Orange County

Orange County, FL — A man was fatally shot Saturday afternoon after reportedly charging at a deputy with a knife during a tense encounter at a home in Orange County, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO).

Deputies responded around 3:30 p.m. to a residence at 203 N. Ortman Drive following reports of a man with schizophrenia who was not taking his medication and behaving erratically in the street.

When deputies arrived, they spoke with the man’s father, who informed them that his son was inside a bedroom armed with a knife. Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation and urged the man to come out and speak with them for about five minutes.

According to investigators, the man eventually exited the room and immediately charged one of the deputies, attempting to stab him and grab his firearm. The deputy, in response to the imminent threat, discharged his weapon, striking the man multiple times.

Deputies rendered aid at the scene until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The deputy involved was also taken to the hospital and treated for head lacerations sustained during the altercation. He is expected to recover.

As per protocol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has launched an independent investigation into the shooting. The findings will be forwarded to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Meanwhile, the involved deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the FDLE’s initial assessment. OCSO will also conduct its own internal investigation once the external review concludes.
