Tragedy unfolded Sunday afternoon after firefighters were ambushed and shot while responding to a reported brush fire near 6500 E Nettleton Gulch Rd. Authorities say the incident occurred around 2:47 PM and quickly escalated into a mass casualty event.
According to preliminary reports, multiple firefighters were shot by an unknown assailant after arriving on scene to battle a vegetation fire. Multiple firefighters were confirmed down, and several others were injured. EMS radio traffic indicated the fire may have been intentionally set to lure first responders into a deadly ambush.
Law enforcement rapidly converged on the area. State police, specialized units, and armored vehicles were deployed, and an active shooter scene was declared at the upper parking lot on Nettleton Gulch. A command post was quickly established, and a medivac flight was requested for the injured.
Sources also confirmed that gunfire was exchanged between law enforcement and a suspect. The investigation is ongoing, and local authorities have not yet released information on the suspect or motive.
