Mesa, AZ – June 4, 2025 – A significant emergency response is underway at a Safeway grocery store in Mesa after reports of a gas leak led to the full evacuation of the premises this evening. The incident, located at 4316 S. Signal Butte Rd, prompted a rapid deployment of Mesa Fire & Medical crews, Mesa Police Department officers, and utility personnel. Southwest Gas was also dispatched.
Mesa Fire & Medical officials confirmed they received a 911 call reporting a distinct smell of gas originating from the front of the building. Upon arrival, emergency responders quickly identified a potential hazard, leading to the decision to evacuate the entire store as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of customers and staff.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing fire trucks, police vehicles, and utility vans converging on the scene shortly after the initial call. Due to the serious nature of a suspected gas leak, Mesa Fire & Medical dispatched a "full balance" of resources, which typically includes multiple engine companies, a hazardous materials team, and command staff, to manage the evacuation, secure the area, and begin investigations into the source of the leak.
Currently, no injuries have been reported in connection with the incident. Police have cordoned off the immediate vicinity around the Safeway, leading to traffic disruptions on S. Signal Butte Rd as emergency vehicles occupy lanes and direct traffic away from the scene. Utility crews are on site and are working to identify and isolate the source of the gas smell, which could range from a minor appliance issue to a more significant line leak.
This remains a developing story, and authorities are actively working to mitigate the situation and determine the cause of the gas leak. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
