SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A weekend traffic crackdown in downtown Scottsdale ended with seven DUI arrests, including one driver who was caught traveling more than 100 mph, according to the Scottsdale Police Department.
Officers were out in force on October 16 and 17 as part of Operation Safe Passage, an ongoing effort to get impaired and dangerous drivers off the road before someone gets hurt.
Over the two nights, officers made 60 enforcement contacts, and the results showed that speeding and impaired driving remain serious concerns in the busy downtown district.
Police reported seven DUI arrests, four criminal speeding violations, two reckless driving violations, 10 civil speeding violations, and 15 other moving violations. Officers also handed out 35 warnings.
What stood out to police was that four of the seven drivers arrested for DUI were also stopped for criminal speeding. One was traveling more than 100 mph.
With downtown Scottsdale drawing plenty of visitors, especially on weekends, police say that kind of behavior puts more than just the driver at risk. Other motorists, pedestrians, and people simply trying to enjoy a night out can all be caught in the consequences.
Police Chief Sends a Clear Message
Scottsdale Police Chief Joe LeDuc made it clear that officers aren't going to look the other way when it comes to dangerous driving.
"Impaired driving and excessive speeding put innocent lives at risk, and we will not tolerate that behavior on Scottsdale's roadways," LeDuc said.
"Operation Safe Passage reflects our commitment to proactive enforcement and preventing tragedies before they happen."
LeDuc said the department plans to continue these enforcement operations, holding dangerous drivers accountable while working to keep Scottsdale's streets safe.
"Everyone deserves to get home safely, and that will remain our priority," he said.
A Reminder Before You Get Behind the Wheel
Scottsdale police say the goal of Operation Safe Passage isn't just about making arrests or writing tickets. It's about preventing the kind of crashes that can change lives in an instant.
Officers are reminding drivers to slow down, pay attention, and never get behind the wheel while impaired.
For anyone planning a night out, police encourage making arrangements ahead of time. Whether that means choosing a designated driver or calling an Uber or Lyft, a little planning can make all the difference.
And for those who decide to drive impaired or push their speed well beyond the legal limit, Scottsdale police say they'll continue watching.
