Two 19-Year-Olds Arrested in Mesa Shooting That Injured Four

MESA, Ariz. — Mesa Police have arrested two 19-year-old men in connection with a Sept. 22 shooting that left four people hospitalized near McKellips Road and Center Street.

The original shooting happened at approximately 6 p.m. on Sept. 22 near West McKellips Road and North Center Street. Police said three males and one female were shot and taken to local hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not released at the time.

Mesa Police now say Jonathan Valladares Mojica, 19, and Mark Cortez Garcia, 19, have been arrested in connection with the case.

According to information provided by Mesa Police, Valladares Mojica faces four counts of aggravated assault, along with charges of assisting a criminal street gang, gang threat, and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Garcia faces four counts of facilitation to commit aggravated assault, along with charges of assisting a criminal street gang and gang threats, according to police.

The charges are allegations, and both defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Police have not yet released additional details about what investigators believe led up to the shooting or the specific alleged roles of each suspect.

In the initial hours after the shooting, Mesa Police reported that one person had been detained while detectives worked to determine what happened. At that time, authorities had not identified that person as a suspect or announced any arrests.

Mesa Police previously described the shooting as an isolated incident.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information may be released as the case moves forward.
