POLK COUNTY, Fla. (July 22, 2026) — A Florida Highway Patrol trooper helped bring a lost German Shepherd to safety Tuesday night after finding the dog wandering along a Polk County roadway.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, at approximately 9:10 p.m. on July 22, a trooper patrolling the Haines Cityarea came upon a German Shepherd walking in the middle of the highway near Detour Road and Kokomo Road.
The trooper stopped to safely secure the dog and attempted to locate its owner. However, after efforts to identify or find the owner were unsuccessful, the dog was transported to the Polk County Animal Shelter.
Authorities said the German Shepherd was wearing an Emotional Support Animal collar at the time it was found.
Anyone who believes the dog may belong to them is encouraged to contact the Polk County Animal Shelter to inquire about reclaiming the animal.
The Florida Highway Patrol reminded pet owners to ensure their animals have current identification tags and microchips to help reunite them quickly if they become lost.
No injuries were reported.
