LEE COUNTY, Fla. (July 24, 2026) — The Florida Highway Patrol has filed multiple felony charges against the driver involved in Wednesday's traffic stop that escalated into a shooting on southbound Interstate 75 at Exit 128 in Lee County.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol update released Friday, the agency's Bureau of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Division (BCII) continues to actively investigate the July 22, 2026, incident.
Authorities identified the driver as Ladavion King, 43, of Fort Myers (DOB: Dec. 9, 1982). King remains in serious condition at an area hospital.
During the investigation, the Florida Highway Patrol filed the following criminal charges against King:
- Four counts of Attempted Second-Degree Murder with a Firearm, first-degree felonies.
- One count of Discharging a Firearm in Public, a second-degree felony.
- One count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, a second-degree felony.
- One count of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, a second-degree felony.
The charges stem from a traffic stop on southbound I-75 near Exit 128 that resulted in an exchange of gunfire involving Florida Highway Patrol troopers.
No additional details regarding the circumstances of the shooting were released Friday. Investigators said the case remains active, and additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
The Florida Highway Patrol has not announced when King is expected to be booked on the charges due to his ongoing hospitalization.
As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
