MELBOURNE, FL — A heartbreaking scene unfolded on Interstate 95 Thursday afternoon as a violent crash claimed the life of a woman and brought traffic to a complete halt in Brevard County.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, troopers were called to the southbound lanes of I-95 near mile marker 188, just north of Pineda Causeway, at approximately 4:12 p.m. after reports of a serious crash.

Preliminary information indicates a 2006 Dodge Ram was traveling southbound in the inside lane when, for reasons still unknown, the vehicle suddenly ran off the roadway to the left and slammed into a crash attenuator. The impact sent the truck airborne, causing it to overturn before crashing into a second vehicle, an Audi RS 7. Debris from the collision then struck a third vehicle, a 2021 Toyota RAV4, adding to the chaos of the scene.

The driver of the Dodge Ram — an adult female whose identity has not yet been officially confirmed — was pronounced deceased at the scene. The drivers of the Audi and Toyota were not injured and remained on scene as investigators worked to piece together what happened.

The crash forced all southbound lanes of I-95 to shut down, creating major traffic backups as vehicles were diverted off the interstate at Pineda Causeway. Drivers described sudden standstills and emergency lights stretching across the roadway as first responders secured the area.

Troopers remain on scene as the investigation continues. Officials say a formal media release will be issued once more information becomes available.
